O.C.Smith - I Betcha 1982 (45)

Hello my friends, many fans of O.C.Smith and soul music know the song "I Betcha' which was included on the album "Love Changes" in 1982. This song was written by H.B.Barnum and Walter "Big Walt" Johnson. In my opinion, they are one of the best team in songwriting Soul music.

The album was originally released on South Bay Records and later in the same year was also released on Motown Records. Motown records released two 45 from that album. The first 45 includes two songs called "Love Changes" and "Got To Know". The second 45 includes the songs "I Betcha" and "That's One For Love". However the song "I Betcha" was also released as a Dj Copy 45. This copy is rare and hard to find.

Energy - Get There 1977 (45)

Hello my friends. This is an unknown vinyl record 45. I bought it a couple of months ago. I was fortunate enough to find an excellent copy. I have seen it on ebay several times but all the copies were in a bad condition.
It includes vocal and instrumental versions. Both of them are pretty nice. The only negative thing is that the duration of the tracks is short (about 2 minutes). For this reason I made a mix in order to make it longer. I had the pleasure to play it on my broadcast on Sunday 14th Oct.

My gems on my broadcasts on Coni-OnAir

Hello my friends, I had the chance to present you several months ago two unreleased songs on my web radio broadcasts. I'm so happy and proud because both tracks were released as a single, in a vinyl record 45 later this summer, in England on Izipho Soul Records. In fact, my broadcasts were the cause of the songs' release in vinyl records. I'm talking about the songs "Chase A Way The Blues" by Percy Mays known today as Lee Mays and the song "Cold Rainy Day" by Freddie Chavez. Both songs are great.

Firstly, I played the song "Chase Away The Blues" on my broadcast on February 12th. It was a song that Lee Mays wrote and recorded in 1977. He discovered it among his reel-to-reel tapes. I had the chance to speak with him about it. Then Lee Mays gave me this song in order to present it on my radio show. Nowadays it has gone out in a vinyl record 45 from the label Izipho Soul Records.

The second song is "Cold Rainy Days" by Freddie Chavez. It was written by himself and was recorded in 1978. I played it on my broadcast on April, 22th. I discovered it as I was searching for another song on his website. I found it on the CD entitled "Time And Time Again" which is sold only on his website.
Here, you can find both 45's with other releases on Izipho Soul Records.

Jeff Adams - Where Did The Good Times Go 1974 (45)

This vinyl record is one of my favorites. It is a great unknown record 45 from Canada. I discovered it two years ago and I bought it a year ago. It includes vocals and an instrumental version. Both are fantastic. The instrumental version includes solo saxophone by the Canadian sax and flute player Keith Jollimore. Keith was a member of the Canadian jazz group called Dr.Music under the direction of Doug Riley. He was also member of the rock group Lighthouse.

Jeff Adams is an unknown singer. There are not much information about him. However, it is worthy to note that he has an absolutely fantastic voice. This great song "Where Did The Good Times Go" was written by Canadian duet Chuck Aarons and Jim Ackley. They released two albums in the early 70's. I want to mention that Jeff Adams released this song again the same year under the name Jeff Addams. In 1974, he also released another record 45 entitled "Haven't You Had Enough / Take Me Back" on Mellow Man Records.
Billboard magazine referred to Jeff Adams back in August 1973. Actually, it was mentioned that Chuck Aarons and Jim Ackley would record an album with him.

Bill King - Love And Affection 1980 (45)

William Morgan Bill King is a pianist, composer, publisher and producer. He was born on June 22, 1946 in Jefferson, Indiana, U.S.A. King began his career performing with local community orchestras and big bands in New York, in 1966. He was a member of The Shadows in 1966.
King relocated to Toronto for the first time in 1969, signing a recording contract with Capitol Records. He released two albums over the next few years entitled ‘Goodbye Superdad’ and ‘Dixie Peach’ in 1973 and 1974 respectively.
He returned to Los Angeles in 1976 as Music Director for vocalist Martha Reeves. While on a European tour with Reeves, he was persuaded to join The Pointer Sisters and spent the next year touring Japan and the U.S as their Music Director.  In 1977 he also played piano for the saxophone player Sonny Criss on the album "Joy Of Sax". He also collaborated with other saxophone player John Handy and the gospel group Mighty Clouds Of Joy.
He moved back to Toronto permanently in the late ‘70s to form the rock group Kearney, King, and McBride (later known as ‘China’) and recorded a self-titled album for Epic/CBS.

In 1980 he released a single on Change Records from Canada. Both tracks included are entitled "Love And Affection" and "Summer Heat (Symphonic Reggae)". Both tracks are exceptional. They were written by himself. The first track "Love And Affection" is a nice track with vocals and very nice solo sax.

By 1984, after a year-long stint with Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks, King launched his first independent jazz label known as Night Passage Records, recording several successful albums on that label over the ensuing four years. He also issued one release on Gaia Records (‘Magnolia Nights’). During the mid ‘80s, King began a career as a jazz broadcaster first at Toronto’s Q-107 and Q-Jazz, then creating ‘The Jazz Report’ which ran for almost three years at CIUT-FM, then nationally as ‘The Jazz Report Radio Network’ which was heard in 26 cities from 1989 to 1991. Bill also hosted and produced “Jazz Preview” a weekly show on Jazz FM for 4 ½ years. During that time he also produced and engineered Joe Sealy’s duets as well as acting as co-producer for Jazz FM Sound of Toronto series. In 1987, he established a parallel career as a publisher and record company president with partner Greg Sutherland, founding ‘The Jazz Report‘ Magazine. The duo went on to begin the Radioland record label in 1992, signing a major manufacturing and distribution deal with Verve/Polygram Canada a year later.

In 1989 he released an album called "Magnolia Knights"on Gaia Records.

Tim Stevens & The High Energy Band - Blue Monday 1981 (45")

I had the chance to present Tim Stevens two times in the past. In 2009 I presented the album of Tim Stevens "Got To Be Free" and the Tim Stevens & Crystal Wilson duet entitled "Are You The One". These records were released on Pittsburgh International Records.

During these couple of months I discovered that my favorite song of the album entitled "Blue Monday", was also released as a single in the same year on the same label, Pittsburgh International Records. The flip side is the song "Sometimes I Wonder". Likewise this song is included on the album.
"Blue Monday" is a song written by himself. Kenny Blake featured on saxophone.

Carter & Chanel - Together Forever / Don't Let Love Go 1981 (45')

Carter & Chanel are Al Carter & Pat Chanel. There is not much information about them. Pat Chanel is a lovely songstress and dancer. They recorded and released one and only album in 1980 on Sweet City Records from Cleveland, Ohio. Owner of the label was Carl Maduri. Some of the bands which released records on the same label were Wild Cherry and La Flavour. One more sought-after record 45' that was released on this label was by John Wilson in 1980.
The album includes the songs "Together Forever"and "Don't Let Love Go" which were included on the record 45' that was released a year later in 1981 on the same label, Sweet City Records. The song "Don't Let Love Go" was first recorded by Brian and Brenda Russell in 1977 and was included on the album "Supersonic Lover".

It is worthy to mention that in 1981 Carter & Chanel appeared in various clubs in New York and a year later they appeared at the Marriott in Pittsburgh. Together with them were the musicians C.J.Puhala on drums (who co-wrote the song "Together Forever"), Roger Kooser on piano and Larry Belli on guitar.

Drummer C.J. Puhala started with the Pittsburgh band Glory in 1968, opening for the likes of Rare Earth, Amboy Dukes, Jorge Santana, Grass Roots, Classics Four, and Little Feat. After attending Duquesne University in 1973, he joined BHQ, a funk/ show band that toured the country extensively until 1979. Post-BHQ in Los Angeles, Puhala joined Carter and Chanel, who recorded for MCA records and toured extensively throughout the U.S. Back in Pittsburgh, he has worked in jazz combos and with Vanilla Soul, Soul Village and Jimbo and the Soupbones.
