The Murder of Eddie Jefferson in 1979

Image
Hello my friends, as a fan of Eddie Jefferson I decided to make an article about his murder in 1979. Eddie Jefferson was one of the most innovative singers of jazz music. The saxophonist Richie Cole and Eddie Jefferson had created a great friendship and partnership from the mid 70s. It was one night in early 1976, when alto saxophonist Richie Cole and vocalist Eddie Jefferson were both participants in the same New York City gig. Despite there was a big age gap between Eddie and Richie, they found a deep musical chemistry. For about 4 years, they were touring as a pair around the states with a minivan, playing just about everywhere until 1979. On the 9th of May 1979,  Eddie Jefferson was shot dead in the streets of Detroit. After completing his live performance at Baker's Keyboard Lounge, he left the venue with his road manager and a female friend. As they were walking, suddenly a vehicle pulled up and its driver fired four shotgun blasts. The police said that Mr.Jeferson got shot

R.I.P. The Saxophonist Amadee Castenell from New Orleans

Image
A few days ago I learnt that the saxophonist Amadee Castenell passed away. I had the opportunity to come in contact with him through Facebook and email messages. Also, he had sent me a few tracks, recordings in order to listen to them. Amadee was a master tenor saxophonist and flautist. He had collaborated with Dr. John, The Neville Bros, Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello, Irma Thomas and many others in his career. He was a member of the seminal New Orleans funk band Chocolate Milk . He was also musical director of this group. He was a member of Allen Toussaint's orchestra for many years. I love the song " Save The Last Dance ". It was included in the album of 1979 " Milky Way ". He co-wrote that song. After the last album with his group Chocolate Milk in 1981, they continued to play music in the festival. But the loss of the RCA deal and his growing reputation as a master on saxophone and flute, opened the door for more performances with Allen Toussaint and Da

Benny Golson, Saxophonist and Composer of Jazz, Dies at 95

Hello my friends, due to the fact that a few days ago the legendary saxophonist Benny Golson passed away, I decided to make this article. He was 95 years old. He died on Saturday the 21st of September at his home in Manhattan. He collaborated with some of the biggest names in jazz music and was a founder of one of the leading groups of the hard bop era.  I need many pages in order to talk about him. Simply, I want to tell you a few words. Every time that I think of Benny Golson, I always remember the 2004 film " The Terminal " starring Tom Hanks. I love this film. Also, I had the opportunity of playing on my show a few tracks from his album of 1978 " I'm Always Dancin' To The Music ". I want to mention two of these songs. The first one is the song " Love Is The Key " which was written by Sharon McMahan who became known with the sublime song " Get Out Of My Life ". The second song was the well-known track of Emotions " Don't Ask M

Bridge - Crying For Love (45)

Image
I remember back in the day in 1999 when I bought the CD " Crying For Love " by the group Bridge. Amazing songs and amazing sound. It is worthy to mention that this album was unreleased music from the early 80s. Now I have the pleasure of listening to the vinyl 45 that was recently released by Izipho Soul Records. Definitely quality music, I say that because I see every day many guys are looking for rare music without paying attention to the quality of music. I'm laughing because they are not able to separate masterpieces from the trash. This vinyl 45 includes two songs. "Crying For Love" written by the leader of the group Paul Tillman Smith and Michael Robinson. Debravon Lewis on vocals. The other song is entitled "Listen" and was written by Paul himself. First recording by Norman Connors in 1977 with James Robinson on vocals. Here in this version you can enjoy the voice of the late great Freddie Hughes with Sonny Lewis on sax. If you want, you can fin

The story behind the song "Close To You" by Chi-Lites

Image
Hello my friends, back into the 2000s, around 2005-2006, I remember my close friend Nicolas Drosos who has passed away, calling me in order to share his surprise about the song " Close To You " by Chi-Lites. He was amazed and really liked this song. It was included in the various CD " Soul Togetherness 2005 " by Expansion Records. When I first listened to it, I admitted that it was a nice song indeed. The CD mentions that the song was written by the great singer and composer of the group, Eugene Record. The production was by Marshall Thompson. Marshall Thompson was another member of the group. I tried to find more information about it but nothing at all came up. It was very strange to me that I couldn't find any information. I had discovered a way via web so as to find something about the rights of the songs but again, no luck. Many years later, in 2014, I found a nice Japanese jazz fusion group. I remember I bought an album at that time and I started searching

Hello my friends, this Sunday I'll be back in the studio. I will have the pleasure of presenting you a few unreleased recordings by the singer, guitarist and composer, from Huntington, Kip Carmen. I will also reveal to you the original recording of a song by Chi-Lites " Close To You ". This song was included in the CD Soul Togetherness 2005. It was released by Expansion Records. The CD mentions that the song was written by the great singer and composer of the group, Eugene Record. The production was by Marshall Thompson. As I told you, I will reveal to you the original recording which is exactly identical with the song on the version of Expansion Records. But there is a main difference. The original recording includes a solo electric guitar. This segment has been removed from the version of Expansion Records. I want to underline that Expansion included again the song " Close to You " in the various " Soul Cafe " in 2012. I want to note that the CD wa

Wow, due to the fact that I'm rearranging my vinyls’ room after a small renovation, I suddenly found a statement of my credit card from my bank. It indicates some money that I spent in October 1997 when I visited London. I also spent money with cash. I remember Tower Records and Reckless Records as I had bought several CDs and vinyls. All of these took place roughly 27 years ago. So, tomorrow Sunday I'll be on air from the studio of Coni-OnAir. During the second hour of my broadcast, I will have the pleasure of presenting you with songs from the vinyls and CDs that I bought in London roughly 27 years ago. Hello my friends, tomorrow I'll be back in the studio after Christmas days. I wish you a very Happy New Year. I will have the chance to present you some songs as a tribute to Les McCann who passed away a few days ago. He was 88 years old. He released more than 50 albums but had his greatest commercial success with “ Compared to What ,” a recording that came together at the last minute in 1969. His greatest commercial success, came purely by chance, in June 1969 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Mr. McCann was appearing at the festival for the first time. After he and the tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris, also an Atlantic artist, played separate sets, they gave an unscheduled performance together, with Mr. Harris as well as the expatriate trumpeter Benny Bailey joining Mr. McCann’s trio. Neither had played with Mr. McCann before, and there was no time for rehearsal. But the performance was to be recorded and filmed for broadcast.      A few days ago, it was sold on eBay
